"Plus this—plus this:
that forever the geography
which leans in
on me I compell
backwards I compell Gloucester
to yield, to
change
Polis
is this"
-Charles Olson
Gloucester, Massachusetts, a place many call their home. Over the years artists, poets, photographers, writers, and more have visited this close knit island. Some resided in the old seaport while others simply came and went. But, no matter the timeframe spent there, they all seemed to be inspired by the city. They painted the harbor, drew the city, photographed the fishing vessels, and wrote about the events. As their forms of art became public and were viewed by many, whether from the city or someone from the outside, the viewers minds developed ideas. They saw Gloucester through the eyes of the artist. They saw what the artist wanted them to see in the way they wanted them to see it. Through this understanding of the influence artists have on their audience, the question forms: how do the arts portray Gloucester and cause opinions to form about the city?
